Point Cook 2016

Point Cook

After all the early concern about the weather, we were very lucky the day turned out the way it did, cloudy, but no rain and the sun even peeking through the cloud sometimes. The last minute fallback was the Sanctuary Lakes Hotel if it rained.

We picked up Nathan and Elva Healey and arrived at the Todd Rd Service Centre at 10.15am expecting to find at least some Buicks already there. The 10.30 departure time came and still no other Buick's had arrived. We left about 10.45am by ourselves and on arrival at the Museum car park, found too our relief, members had gone directly there. Tim King, a club member from Caramut in western Victoria, about 3 hours drive from Melbourne, was also there in his VW. He had rung me a few days earlier to say he would like to come along, as he had to come to Melbourne for other reasons. Tim owns a restored 1927 Buick Tourer as well as other vintage and classic vehicles.

The museums modern main building held a great variety of old planes, flying memorabilia and photos. It was nearly 12.30pm, when I realized we needed to have lunch before the flying display started at 1pm. After our picnic lunch around the cars we headed across for the flying display. The pilot gave a talk on the 1955 Winjeel training plane before he took off and performed some aerobatics to the delight of the considerable crowd. The Early Holden Club was also there on the day.

After that, there were the planes in the Restoration Hangar and 2 other display hangars to inspect. The vast array of planes went from a replica Bristol Boxkite, First World War fighter planes, helicopters to fighter jets like the F-111, Phantom and Mirage, about 30 planes and helicopters in all.

Overall, it turned out to be a very enjoyable day with everyone having a great time.
